art is the weapon

Brian Musasia, also known as Msale prides himself in his signature abstract Afro patterns that are now easily distinct in wall murals done by BSQ Crew. The crew (BSQ) is a street art group based in Kenya’s Capital, Nairobi and physically based at the Dust Depo Art Studio (Railways Museum). A graduant of Fine Art and Design from Kenyatta University, Msale’s love for art did not start in campus. He began drawing and painting at a very young age and credits his mother, a pre-school teacher, for fostering his creative interests.

Msale specializes in graffiti  with a specific style called ‘grafikali’, acrylics, oil, charcoal, graphite & ink media. His fellow crew members refer to him as being ‘highly experimental’ as he constantly challenges himself to push art boundaries. In this constant quest of seeking new ways of artistic expression, Msale fused his love for the calligraphic style of writing and graffiti painting. A style he calls ‘GRAFIKALI’ (kaligrafia+graff) which he has since explored and used it to create amazing 3D portal-like murals, realistic potraits and even body art.

Apart from his personal commissioned projects, Msale has been involved in numerous community projects and art workshops. Msale was part of the group exhibition by BSQ Crew held at the National Museums of  Kenya, Street Diaries group exhibition by Kenyan street artists held at Alliance Francaise, and is also part of the Sunday Boyz group of street artists that work in the various estates around Nairobi creating colorful murals with the help of the locals all in a bid of beautifying the streets, a project called ‘Mtaani Museum’.

He is keen on discovering new styles and media that can be used to propel the street art culture in Kenya to new heights. He hopes the impacts of such will be felt throughout Africa and eventually worldwide.
